Temporary Long Term Health Insurance

Temporary Long Term Health Insurance: When You Only Need Temporary Coverage

It may sound like a contradiction in terms but yes temporary, long term heath insurance does exists and serve a good purpose. Temporary is just that, usually policies are for 6 months to a year. They are designed to cover you in interim phases of unemployment or job loss.

Who should consider a temporary policy?

Have you ever changed jobs? Quite often there is a gap between when you leave your previous job and take up your new one. When you leave one position you forfeit all of the pay and benefits that once received. This includes your health plan. Quite often your company’s health plan will not cover you for those interim periods between jobs. This is when a temporary policy would be useful. Sometimes, your new health plan may not take effect immediately. There may be a gray area between when one ended and the other begins. You could be uncovered for a period of a few weeks to months. This could leave you vulnerable to high medical costs should you or a member of your family need urgent medical care during this time. A temporary policy could help bridge this gap between polices so you are protected.

What about temporary employees?

Temporary employees should definitely consider a policy. Many love temping. They get a new challenge and experience working with different situations. Sometimes they even get paid more per hour. The employer benefits as well as they are not obliged to provide any health benefits to temporary workers. The workers are left vulnerable to high costs should they be stricken ill or suffer an accident.

How are cost determined?

Temporary insurance costs are quite similar to other types of insurance. They will look at your age and state of health. They may also ask which state you live in. You costs will be based on these factor and of course how long you want the policy for. Some are as little as 30 days and some can be extended to over a year.

Conclusion

If you’re are between jobs, laid off or a temporary worker, a temporary long term health plan should be considered. There is no way to know when illness or accident will strike. The benifits of being protected will far outweigh the costs.
