Self Employed Health Insurance

Self Employed Health Insurance: Something All Self Employed Should Have

Did You Just Lose Your Job?

If you have just lost your job, perhaps you did not know that you can still get health insurance from your former policy. For up to eighteen months, that is. You may decide to continue to receive health insurance from your former employer’s group health insurance policy, at your own expense, of course.

So What Are Your Options?

If you are self employed, there are several options that you have other than receiving a health insurance policy from an employer. Your first option is to get an individual health insurance policy. There are several types of options that you can get with this type of policy. The first option is fee for service. This is considered a traditional form of health insurance. A certain amount of your medical expenses, such as doctor visits and hospital stays, will be paid for. The main advantage that comes with this type of individual health insurance policy option is that you will be able to use pretty much any doctor or hospital that you choose to go to, for the most part. The other option that you have for an individual health insurance policy is a managed care plan. With this type of plan, your medical expenses will be prepaid. All that you will need to do is pay a low co-pay, usually between ten and twenty dollars. With this option, the doctors and hospitals that you are allowed to go to are already picked out and have contracts with your insurance company. Generally, you will not be able to use any other doctors or hospitals. Another one of your options that you have other than receiving your health insurance policy from an employer is still receiving a group health insurance policy. However, you are able to get this health insurance policy through other places besides through an employer. Many types of organizations, including religious organizations, community organizations, and professional organizations have group health insurance policies. Also, if you wanted to, you and the members of your extended family could get a group health insurance policy. One of the things to keep in mind is that the amount of discount you will receive for group health insurance policies generally depends on the amount of people that you have in your group, so the more the merrier.

Who Else Might Need It?

There are people other than those who are self employer that may need a health insurance coverage policy from somewhere other than your employer. You might be wondering who and why. Well, people who work for small businesses that do not have group health insurance coverage or have lowered it. Many small businesses have done so within the last three years, due to the raising price of health insurance policies.
